Four women to watch in internet video
April 2, 2007
I was recently chided by someone I like and respect for not including enough women’s voices in my VON07 wrap-up video. Casey McKinnon of Galacticast had called me out… and rightly so. In my defense, I did give considerable time in the piece to Dina Kaplan’s leadership in this space. We all know the Sarah Atwoods, Casey Mckinnons, Amanda Congdons and Zadi Diaz’ in Internet TV. So to give voice, as best i can in this space, to women I believe will be a big part of Internet Television, meet four “micro-media-moguls” who truly inspire me.
Toni Lyn
Toni Lyn is an ardent crafter and a lover of all things beautiful things. Her passions are beading and scrapbooking, but she admires and is influenced by all types of creativity. She and I are collaborating on a project we think will be hugely successful in creating a vibrant, video centric, online community.
CraftyNation is an internet TV show that empowers and inspires creative crafters.
Meredith Swanson
Meredith Swanson has just entered into the hardest, but most rewarding job out there. Fifty days ago she became a new mom. How do I know fifty days? Because I just read her “day 50″ blog entry in her blogging the first 100 days of motherhood. Here’s what we’re working on, because babies don’t come with instructions. We shot it when she only about a month pregnant and have shot episodes since.
Adrienne Brawley
Adrienne is a fierce world traveler. Most recently, her wanderlust led her on an adventure to Africa for the Travel Channel. She brings that same enthusiasm and storytelling skill set back home in a very cool video that she and her husband produced about the hippest part of DC, Adams Morgan.
Take a walking tour provided by Cultural Tourism DC of historic Adam’s Morgan in Washington DC. Produced and edited my “Moms on the Road Africa” mom, Adrienne Brawley, take a tour of restaurants and bars and check out some of the local flair!
Grayson Hurst Daughters
The name alone conjures up images of magnolia trees and Georgian mansions. Like me, Grayson, of the SpaceyG Review, comes from the old media space and in her “Journal of Southern Culture” her highly tuned bullshit detector is applied to innumerable themes of public discourse. She recently described her transition from old to new media:
I’m a southerner. Given to gross hyperbole if not always good manners. I turned 31 in the National Hurricane Center as Hurricane Andrew blew the place apart. I never want to be a broadcast journalist again. I hated it. What I really want to be is a damn good gossip columnist.
She does a very, very funny show called “Let’s Conversation”
She’s also producing a decidely non-traditional tech show called Southern Fried Tech. In a world LOUSY with tech shows this one shines with a uniquely southern voice and tremendously watchable pace.
Disclosure: I’m currently collaborating with Toni Lyn and Meredith Swanson. Adrienne Brawley has a very, very, very, smart and exciting show idea…stay tuned. Grayson’s got my back and I owe her at LEAST two martinis (or so she tells me).

Wow Jim, that was excellent! I had not heard of these women before, but I now ADORE Meredith Swanson. Even though I’m not pregnant, I’m still a hormonal female who cries during powerful commercials on TV… so I can feel her pain!
Thank you for highlighting these “micro-media-moguls”, even I can get lost in all the male-produced content… especially if the males are easy on the eyes
Ahem..
